Winners of 2013 AQHA Youth Art Show and Contest Announced

The winners of the 2013 Youth Art Show and Contest were announced December 6 during the show’s opening reception at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. This year, 10 area middle and senior high school students were awarded cash prizes and honors for their art work depicting the American Quarter Horse throughout history. Plus, one teacher received an all-expense-paid field trip to the Hall of Fame for the following school year.

In August, the Hall of Fame contacted teachers in Region 16 to encourage their students to participate in this annual art show. Teachers were given lesson plans to teach students about the American Quarter Horse’s role in history. Students created art work and a written summary of what they learned after the lesson. Each entry was judged to select the winners of each age group.

This year, nearly 300 students submitted pieces of art, but only 150 were chosen to be hung in the Hall of Fame, and 10 were selected to receive top honors.

The winners of the middle school division:

First – Isaiah Flores, Bowie Middle $500

Second – Jonathan Luna, Bowie Middle $250

Third – Eric Daniels, Dalhart Junior High $100

Honorable Mention – Elizabeth Wilde, Canyon Junior High

Honorable Mention – Maria Valero, Bowie Middle

The winners of the high school division:

First – Amy Nguyen, Highland Park High $500

Second – Richard Jarvis, Spearman High $250

Third – Dominic Pham, Highland Park High $100

Honorable Mention – Nicole McClure, Tulia High

Honorable Mention – Allie Collier, Canadian High

The best-in-show honor was given to Amy Nguyen. Her work will remain on display at the Hall of Fame until next year’s show. Nguyen’s teacher, Doug Howard, received a field trip with transportation costs included to the Hall of Fame during the 2014-2015 school calendar year.

The art show is now open to the public and will remain open until January 24, 2014. Visitors will be able to vote on their favorite piece in the show. The piece with the most votes at the show’s close will receive the People’s Choice Award and a $400 cash prize. Admission is free to AQHA members.
