What does National Lipstick Day have to do with horses? Are you familiar with the name Elizabeth Arden? If you’re a woman, our bet is yes. Although you might remember her as a cosmetics pioneer, Arden was also a horse-lover and racehorse owner. In fact, one of her horses, Jet Pilot, won the Kentucky Derby in 1947. (“Elizabeth Arden.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2014. Web. 29 July 2014.)

It’s also rumored that Arden used to paint her horse’s lips with her signature pink shade… (LipSource) While that’s harder to confirm, we were able to locate Arden’s 1966 obituary in the St. Petersburg Times, which contained some interesting facts.“Florence Nightingale Graham [Elizabeth Arden] made her fame and fortune from rich women and fast horses. In achieving glistening success, she treated her women like horses and her horses like women. Both gave every appearance of loving her pampering.”- St. Petersburg Times

It also stated she “liked only handsome horses, and she insisted her jockeys spare the whip and that her trainers not overexert the animals.” Click here to read the full obituary.

“Treat a horse like a woman and a woman like a horse. And they’ll both win for you.”- Elizabeth Arden

This reminds us of a special event that took place at the 2013 Reichert Celebration, “Cowboys Kissing For A Cause,” during which Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and amateur exhibitor, Kelly Kay Johnsrud, collected trainer’s lip prints in order to raise money for cancer research and help find solutions for domestic violence.

“Sometimes it’s just the simple things. People don’t know how important it is to have lipstick on while you’re showing. Cheek color [is also important]. When you’re wearing a hat, your face is totally shaded. [Cheek color] totally makes your face stand out from that far away. [It might be a] color they normally wouldn’t pick at the office but that would work 50 feet away on the rail. It can make such a difference, and then they look good in their pictures.”- Kelly Kay Johnsrud EquineChronicle.com, 2013
