Weight Loss in Metabolic Patients: A New Research Study

Metabolic syndrome in the equine patient is a complex and often frustrating problem for horse owners, compounded by insulin resistance and laminitis.  In almost all of these cases, excessive body weight actually contributes to the problem and may be one of the initiating factors, actually contributing to underlying inflammation on a cellular level. Excessive weight is also one of the main difficulties owners face in regards to controlling and reducing over time.

Nouvelle Research, Inc, in collaboration with Tom Schell, D.V.M., CVCH, just released the results of a 30 day study on equine metabolic patients in a ‘real world’ setting, evaluating weight loss and improvement in foot soreness with daily administration of a berry and fruit based herbal formula.

The research formula utilized is a proprietary blend of concentrated Blueberry, Bilberry, Noni fruit, Amla, Poria cocos, Astragalus and Apple Peel, which was readily accepted by all participants.  These fruits and berry extracts were chosen based on years of clinical research indicating benefits in helping to improve insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism and modulation of the inflammatory process, which is deeply tied into metabolic health conditions.

Thirteen (13) patients were selected at random with no dietary, exercise or other regimen changes. Our goal was to evaluate for improved body condition, weight loss and foot soreness over the 30 day period of time.  Insulin levels were not monitored during the trial.

In a prior study, with a similar formula, Nouvelle Research, Inc., had indicated benefit in insulin levels in equine metabolic patients.

At the end of the 30 day period, 11 out of 13 horses demonstrated weight loss with an average of 33.8 lbs, with some losing in excess of 50 lbs.  Foot soreness was also improved in 7 out of the 13 patients.

Metabolic syndrome is a complex process, contributing to many health ailments in the horse.  In almost all cases, underlying chronic inflammation is a main contributor, which is often exacerbated by an overweight body condition.  If weight cannot be reduced, in many equine patients, the vicious cycle continues.  A healthy diet and proper exercise are often seen as the main means of controlling this condition, in which case a healthy diet includes many foods, such as fruits and berries, which demonstrate clinical benefits in enhancing health, providing antioxidant support and thereby promoting proper cellular function.

The conclusion of the research trial was that these fruits and berry extracts demonstrated marked benefits to the EMS patients, with notable weight loss, improved foot soreness and overall improved health.

Nouvelle Research, Inc. is proud to release this investigational research blend to our customers, Cur-OST EQ Meta-Support.
