The Center for Equine Health at the University of California, Davis, is conducting an online survey that seeks to “identify current trends in performance horse care linked to wellness and success in the show ring.” The survey is completely anonymous and takes only five to ten minutes to complete.
Horse owners, trainers, riders and veterinarians are invited to participate.
Questions include what types of disciplines you participate in, what performance level you compete at, most common injuries in your sport, most important factors when considering a venue, and your perception of current medication rules.
Specific questions about your horse include what age you started showing it under saddle, any services performed ahead of purchase, current maintenance regime, how many years your horse stays on the competitive circuit, average yearly vet expenses, and many more.
Claudia Sonder, veterinarian and director of the Center for Equine Health, is conducting the study to help identify links between performance horse management practices and musculoskeletal health, injury, and performance.
“Once we identify trends in management practices and correlate them with health, injury and performance, we will target research to fill gaps in knowledge and establish science-based recommendations for equine athletes,” Sonder said.
