Whether you call it the Dixie, Dixie Nationals, or Southern Classic, all roads lead to Jackson, Mississippi this time of year. The 2016 event has already begun with a well-attended Equestrians With Disabilities show February 9th-10th. The Quarter Horse portion of the Dixie Nationals began on Tuesday, February 16th and will continue through Sunday, February 21st. Along with having the notoriety of being known as the largest Quarter Horse show held during a stock show in the country, the 2016 event will award $100,000 in money and prizes to lucky competitors.
With over $18,000 to be presented in Roping events alone, the class sizes were large to kick off the show on Tuesday. According to show management, $9,645 was paid out on the first day of competition. Wednesday’s classes added Working Cow Horse, Boxing, Heading, and Heeling. $10,980 was paid out on Day 2! On Wednesday evening, the Watson-Ford Roping Challenge took place where the top 20 open ropers and top five amateur ropers returned to compete for cold, hard cash. Over $14,000 was paid out to those with the fastest times and quickest hands.
Judges for the AQHA/NSBA/NRHA show are Joe Carter, Chris Jeter, Buddy Fisher, David Avery, Lisa Modern, Pete McAlister, Tom Robertson, Lance Treptow, and Clint Fullerton.
Other special events coming up over the next few days include the $10,000 added money Freestyle Reining, on Friday evening; the Moonlite Madness shopping event from 9-11 pm, also on Friday; the Southern Classic Horse Sale, on the 20th; and the Dixie National Equine Expo 17th-21st.
Manning the helm of the Dixie Nationals Quarter Horse Show this year is AQHA judge Casey Devitt. Having held his card for the past nine years, he has officiated at major events such as the AQHA Open and Amateur World Championship Show (4X), the AQHA Select World Show, and the NSBA World Show. In addition, he has helped manage the Arizona Sun Circuit for the past two years and frequently serves as an AQHA Steward at World Shows and is an AQHA Professional Horseman.
Behind the desks in the entry office this year is new show secretary, Vanessa Lay, who is certified in both AQHA and NRHA for her secretarial management skills. In addition to working with the West Virginia Quarter Horse Association and Quebec Quarter Horse Association, she has also served as an announcer’s assistant at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
