Yes, at the AjPHA Youth World Championship Show they even give away prizes for dogs! This afternoon, some 20 or so canines and handlers tried their very best to be named Top Dog in the World Championship Dog Races.
Dogs were divided into Small Dog and Large Dog divisions. Then, the top dogs in each split returned for the finals.
Each dog entered the pen with two handlers. One handler held the dog at the end of the pen, and the other waited at the opposite end of the arena. Once the announcer gave the signal, the dogs were let loose. The second handler had to put the leash back on the dog and run to the white circle in the center of the pen.
The winner of the class was an enthusiastic black and white Border Collie named Thorn. This 5-year-old pooch is owned by Debbie Powers of Westminster, Maryland. His favorite tricks are chasing his tail and howling at the moon.
