A character worthy of the silver screen came out on top today in Yearling Mares at the 2014 All American Quarter Horse Congress. Tom Robertson led My Girl, aka “Mia,” to the win for Kimberly Hughes. If you wanted to guess as to Mia’s namesake, more than likely, you’d be correct. Especially if you’re a fan of Motown music…

“We bought Mia as a weanling filly from Dr. Steve and Kelli Jensen,” Hughes says. “We bought her when she was about three months old. Tom and I were drawn to her because she was a correct filly, and we thought she was a beautiful color. She had a lot of charisma to her.”

Mia is by Hesa Stemwinder and out of a Kid Coolsified daughter that’s a Reserve World Champion in her own right, also a home-bred by the Jensen family.

“I think she’s got an elegance about her,” Hughes says. “She’s sort of extreme. She’s N/N, but she’s got substance to her. She’s just a beautiful profiler, and she can three-quarter too.”

Mia's cheering crowd looks on.

Hughes hasn’t yet decided if she will show Mia in the amateur division of the class later on at the Congress. “We’ll discuss it at dinner this evening,” she says. “It will kind of be a half celebratory/half strategy meeting!”

Claiming the Reserve Champion spot in the class was Tim Finkenbinder with FG Coco Chanel. Rounding out the top three was JT Mitchell with My Ohh My; the pair also won the limited division, and Roy Donn with Cool To Get Roses came in second. Dewey Smith led PF Special Effects to a win in the Futurity, and Michael Booker with Pitchin Some Heat came in second.
