They say true horse people never stop learning and are always searching for way to broaden their perspectives.
It’s true at any level, and when the some of the very best in the pleasure horse industry, Capital Quarter Horses, saw Shez Got Addy Tude, a beautiful horse with “an amazing arena presence… a horse that commands attention and makes you want to root for her,” they wanted to add her to their lineup.
This time, the beauty in their sights wasn’t a pleasure horse, however. She’s their first reiner, a 3-year-old mare by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of the great producing mare Miss Lil Addy Tude, who made the finals at this year’s NRHA Futurity with Kole Price, a huge feat for anyone, let alone first-time owners.
Read on for our Q & A with Hillary Timchak to see how this endeavor enhances the Capital Quarter Horses program and their vast amount of knowledge, and how “Addy” has potentially diversified their path:
Q: What inspired Capital QH to get involved in the sport of reining? What attributes of the sport were appealing?
A: We’re true “horse people” and appreciate every facet of the horse business. The reining is such an awesome sport, and we’ve always thrown around the idea of owning one. When Kole and Kelsey called us on Shez Got Addy Tude, the stars just aligned!
Q: How does this involvement enhance your renowned business with pleasure horses, and vice versa? Do you recommend expanding your horizons in this manner to others, and if so, why?
A: I think being involved in more than one discipline allows us to further appreciate horses as a whole and what they’re capable of. You can learn a lot by watching other industries, how they operate, and what they look for in a high-quality prospect. We are excited to be part of the booming business the reining is, and even more thrilled to diversify our knowledge. It’s been a lot of fun so far!
Q: Tell us more about Shez Got Addy Tude, the mare who made it to the finals at the NRHA Futurity – what was special about her, and what are your plans for her?
A: Addy is a 3-year-old mare by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of the great producing mare Miss Lil Addy Tude. She was bred by our friends at Toyon Ranch and previously owned by Michelle Kimball. Kole will tell you that he’s been looking for the right horse to get us involved in the reining one day, and this was the one! Being a mare, she’s perfect for us as we can seamlessly add her to our breeding program and start hopefully producing some awesome reining prospects.
This horse has an amazing arena presence, she’s beautiful – she’s a horse that commands attention and makes you want to root for her and mark her. What makes her even more special is that she rallied and had all this success after being off for 3 months this summer and fall. She got sick and had to miss lots of the show prep that most Reiners would get in traveling to pre-futurities, etc. The fact that she did as well as she did at her very first show is pretty spectacular.
4. How did you choose Kole Price, and would you like to say anything about him?
We’ve known Kole and Kelsey for several years and really admire and respect them personally and professionally. Even if they hadn’t approached us with the opportunity to buy Addy, choosing them for this new adventure is a no-brainer. They run an exceptional business and I’ve always loved both of their horses. I like too many things about their program to list, and needless to say, it’s definitely the right fit for us! People keep telling us “This isn’t normal, this doesn’t just happen, especially your first year!” This is very true, and we are very fortunate to have early success like this, but with a horse and trainer like Addy and Kole, I knew we could do it!
