We like to get to know our exhibitors, as many have been coming to our show for decades. As the show has grown, we enjoy meeting new exhibitors every year. This past year, I’ve gotten to know Stephanie Lynn, AQHA judge and Professional Horseman from Fall Creek, Wisconsin. She graciously offered to mentor a youth or amateur while at the Iowa Show Circuit this year.
The first person that came to mind was a new name and one the first exhibitors to reserve stalls for the 2013 show in the middle of January – select exhibitor Christina Granatier from Illinois. I contacted Christina and asked her if she would be interested in an AQHA Professional Horseman as a mentor during the show.
Christina’s response was, “I would LOVE the opportunity. I am not with a trainer and do a pile of events and would love some input. Thanks so much for thinking of me.”
While she’s a newbie Iowa Show Circuit exhibitor, Christina is far from a novice and has lots of experience. She did, however, appreciate having a second eye and being part of a group.

“I firmly believe that the success and future of our equine industry lay in the hands of the trainers and professionals whose job it is to make sure everyone feels welcome and like they are part of the show,” Stephanie says. “It is my belief that as horsemen, it is our job to help other riders become better horsemen. If all we do is listen to their concerns or offer advice about a pattern or piece of equipment, we have done something to include new people, educate and bring out the best in our competition.”
Christina and her son are relatively new to this area and even intend to stall with Stephanie’s group at future shows. They will be an easy addition to the group.
“It was fun getting to know her and to watch her excitement as she and her horse progressed though the week,” Stephanie says.
Stephanie’s enthusiasm for the exhibitor is great to see, and it is backed by action, not just words. This fits well with the way my mother, Mary Moorman, a long time manager of the circuit, has always gone that extra step to make sure all exhibitors feel welcome. This extends even to our fee structure, which is truly a flat fee and encourages novice youth and amateur and newcomers to participate in our event.
NOTE: Remember, you too can write your very own EC iReport about a horse-related event in your area of the country. All you have to do is e-mail b.bevis@equinechronicle.com for more information.
