There’s just something about the word “roach” when it comes to mane care that seems rather…intense, perhaps?
It’s not a style name that brings to mind words like “beautiful” and “graceful,” which are words we always want to hear when describing our horses.
“Hogging” is the name the British give for the act of shaving all the mane off, and it still doesn’t seem to be that elegant of a word either.
However, the reality is that roaching (or hogging) the mane can actually enhance your horse’s elegant neck and supple topline. Roaching can take something that’s ragged, like a rubbed mane, and make it beautiful. While it may be utilitarian, it can be a divine design.
There are a couple of reasons why someone would roach their horse’s mane: the quality of the mane isn’t conducive to being banded, or the horse has rubbed out a large portion of his mane, thus inspiring the owner to shave off the rest.
