Shorty’s Caboy Hattery’s 200X Gift to California Chrome

Co-owners of Triple Crown contender California Chrome, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, will be receiving a very special package in the mail from Oklahoma City. Two 100X, pure beaver, bone colored, custom Shorty’s Caboy hats are set to arrive at the DAP “Dumb Ass Partners” Racing Partnership headquarters today.

If you’ve been keeping up with media coverage following California Chrome, you’ll know that Coburn has been described as the more “loquacious” of the two owners and is hardly ever photographed without his 10-year-old cowboy hat with the sweat-stained brim (Sports Illustrated, 2014).

However, this generous gift isn’t meant to serve as a replacement for his lucky lid. Shorty simply wanted to extend a gesture of goodwill to fellow horse enthusiasts who have defied the odds to achieve unimaginable success.

“I gave them because I admire their story and they are just good ole guys,” Shorty says. “I don’t expect them to wear them on Belmont Day, because that might not be good luck. They have won in their other hats; I wouldn’t change anything…”

“I did not do this for recognition. Something about Steve’s interviews told me what a good heart he has…”
Whether we see two Shorty’s hats enter the winner’s circle at the Belmont or not, we’re pretty confident that we know two Oklahoma cowgirls who will be cheering on California Chrome until the photo finish. All eyes will be focused on New York on Saturday, June 7th to see if California Chrome can become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years.
