The Trail preliminaries began earlier this week at the 2013 AQHA Adequan Select World Show in Amarillo, Texas with 66 tough competitors. In the end, it was Catherine Keith of Abilene, Texas who claimed the World Champion title with her equine partner, Rinskis Old Gold, a sorrel gelding by Zippos Old Gold and out of Precious Rinski.
We had the opportunity to chat with Keith’s good friend and former horse trainer, Prim Cockrell, about this morning’s long-awaited win.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” Cockrell says. “It was wonderful to see, because the very first time Cathy showed she rode around the pen crying because she was so nervous. Now, she is at the World Show, and she is a World Champion on a horse I used to use as a lesson horse!”
“I raised this little horse, and he is just a tremendous little horse, just like his mother was. I still have his half-sister, who is part of my equine therapy program in Oklahoma that uses retired show horses to impact inner-city kids.”
After Cockrell retired from the training side of the horse industry to work as the Director for the Equine Therapy Center in Guthrie, OK, she directed Keith to a new horse trainer, Buddy Fisher.
“After I sold the horse to Cathy, I promised Buddy that he’d like him,” she says. “Thank heavens he gave him a chance. Buddy is a great young man and a wonderful person who does the horse business the way it needs to be done. You work hard for what you get.”
“I always said that Cathy would someday win the World. She was Reserve last year in the Trail. She said that if she got qualified this year she couldn’t go, because she’d be too nervous. I told her that when the time came she would be there.”

Burnes was also the first place Intermediate rider in the class. The second place Intermediate team was Tamra Kyle with Dunitagain Naturally.
