Sarah Headley had quite a fan club present to witness her big win this morning in Amateur 3-Year-Old Mares at the 2013 Quarter Horse Congress. Her mother and father, Kathy and Steve Headley, were cheering her on from the stands, as were her brother and two and a half year old nephew Colton.
Kathy says Colton will make up their third generation of halter horse enthusiasts, and he’s ready to get started, here at the Congress no less.
“The first thing he said when he got up this morning was, ‘Ride Aunt Sarah horse,’ ” Kathy says. “We told him that might be a little bit of a rodeo this morning.”
Aunt Sarah’s horse, aka Cauzin Trouble, made her first trip to the Congress this year. The Headley family has owned the mare since she was just a yearling. Sarah’s father, Steve, has led “Trouble” to two Select World Championship wins.
“She’s been really special to us,” Sarah says. “We’ve had her since she was a yearling. She’s just one of those that we just love. [She can be trouble] sometimes, but, for the most part, she’s pretty sweet. She’s high maintenance.”
This isn’t Sarah’s first big win at the Congress. She was named the 2012 Congress Champion in Amateur 3-Year-Old Geldings with Motavated.
“It must be my lucky class!”
Up next, Sarah will compete with a 2-year-old gelding, 3-year-old gelding, and aged gelding on Monday. Then, it’s off to the AQHA World Show where Ross Roark will lead Trouble in Open 3-Year-Old Mares and Sarah will show again in Amateur 3-Year-Old Mares.
The Headley family relies on the expert guidance of Doug Landon and Ross Roark when fitting and showing their stock.
