We caught up with the Weakly family as they headed back to the stalls to prepare “Diva” for the upcoming Grand and Reserve class.

“She’s a relatively new horse for us,” Josh Weakly says. “She came from Jason Smith. His daughter Shyanne and his mother showed her last year and won the Youth and Select World with her. We bought her and bred her in the spring, and Ross got her in May. We just took her to the Red Bud to qualify, and she’s been there ever since.”

Josh plans to show the five-year-old mare, by the late MH Supremo, in Amateur 3-Year-Old Mares next week.

“I like to have an older horse to show,” he says. “She’s very balanced and she’s feminine looking, but she’s got a lot of mass and body to her. She fits what we like in a Halter horse.”

In addition to Diva, the Weakly family brought a three-year-old Halter gelding and Kaleena’s all-around mount to compete here at the Congress. Also joining the crew is the couple’s toddler “Jax,” who’s thoroughly enjoying the Congress experience. “He’s too excited to take any naps,” Kaleena says. “It’s go, go, go.”  As it turns out, Jax takes after both mom and dad. “He likes the horses and his tractors,” Josh says. “She bought him these little horse statues, and he takes them out to the field with him.” “And he takes his tractors to the horse show,” Kaleena adds.

WeaklyWhen Jax is back home on the farm, he prepares for his competition debut by practicing aboard his pony “Popcorn.” We may be looking at a future Leadline competitor in the not-so-distant-future… “He doesn’t sit still very long though,” Kaleena says. “After the first lap, he’ll be ready to get off,” Josh adds.
