PtHA Exhibitor of the Month #2- Nancy Perkins

The PtHA Wrangler Exhibitor of the Month is Nancy Perkins from Zephyrhills, Florida. Perkins has been showing since she was 16, starting out in open shows, then Quarter Horse shows, and now Pinto shows with her lovely Pinto mare, You Bet Your Roses. “I’m 66 years old, and I’m so lucky to have her!” Perkins says.

When asked if she could recall her first show experience, Perkins says, “My first show was quite the learning experience. My dad took me, and we learned so much from helpful people. I didn’t win a ribbon, but I knew that I loved the challenge of improving and making my horse and myself worthy of a ribbon. I’m glad I didn’t quit, as showing is a lot of work. However, the work and responsibility of horse ownership is good for children and for adults. It’s a great outlet for relaxing and stress release!”

When asked what her horse is like, Perkins says, “Sierra is adorable, sweet, and smart! I train her with the help of my husband, Dusty, in our backyard, so she’s very trainable and willing to learn! She’s got her own personality, and she thinks she’s a princess. She gives that look of, ‘Here I am! I’m GSR royalty!’ Her sire is Gentlemen Send Roses! She’s a real flush, so you can bet on her to do her job!”

Perkins and Sierra show in their local Florida Pinto Club. “I never miss a show! The Pinto World was my first last year, and Sierra was Reserve Champion Tobiano 4-Year-Old Mare and Reserve Champion Walk Trot Trail Horse. She placed or made the finals in all her Pinto World Classes,” Perkins says.

When asked what she enjoys most about showing, Perkins says, “I love the challenge of getting my horse to perform to the best of her abilities that day! We work with animals with their own personalities that let us adapt them through trust and leadership. There can be perfect goes or we need to keep working on that skill. Every show is a leaning experience with great people and fun experiences with the Pinto horses we love!”
