Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who were affected by the swath of severe weather that spread across North Texas over the weekend. One of the hardest hit towns was Van, where two people have been confirmed dead, eight are missing, and 43 have been injured.
The towns of Cisco and Burkburnett were also hit by tornados, (resulting in one fatality in Cisco) and a freight train derailed near Valley View in Cooke County early Friday after the tracks were affected by severe flooding.
According to NBC News, we’re not out of the wood just yet. Today, the severe weather threat moves north with a risk of tornados in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
If you’d like to help those recovering in Van, there are several community groups accepting donations.
Monetary donations can be made at RedCross.org, by calling 1-800-Red-Cross, or by texting RedCross to 90999 to make a $10 donation to their disaster relief fund.
Just last week, AQHA amateur competitors, Joanne and Mike Garnett, lost their barn in a tornado that hit Lincoln, Nebraska. Thankfully, all of their horses are safe, but there was a considerable amount of property damage.
In light of the severe weather across the central US., we encourage equine facilities to review their Severe Weather Preparedness Plans and make arrangements ahead of time in case evacuation is necessary.
