Helping to close out the 2015 APHA show season and kick off the 2016 competition year was the Arizona Copper Country Paint-O-Rama that took place December 29th through January 3rd at WestWorld in Scottsdale, Arizona. Judging the event were Daren Wright, Laura Gilmer, Gayle Lampinen, Jan Larsen, David Parlier, Delena Doyle, Terri Wirthlin, and Chris Jeter.
In addition to sunshine and moderate temperatures, competitors enjoyed a variety of special events and fundraisers over the course of the week. On New Year’s Day, the inaugural ApHC Hall of Fame inductees were honored during a ceremony in front of family and friends. The inductees included Colin and Jean Beals, and the late Jean Buzzard, Peggy Hanshaw, and APHA stallion My Painted Robin.
An entertaining Costume Contest and Calcutta was held to benefit After The Homstretch Horse Rescue. The class was judged by Arizona Diamondbacks organist Bobby Freeman and Dannielle Marturana, two of the rescue’s directors. There were plenty of incredible costumes including a Budweiser “Clydesdale,” a motorcycle Reiner, characters from Old McDonald’s farm, the Mad Hatter with Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, and Elmer Fudd with Bugs Bunny. In the end, the winners were Danielle Stephenson, Mindy Swan, Tene Miller, Tom Gilmore, Madyson Peters, Kris Richardson, and friends (aka KISS), who assisted in raising over $1,700 for the cause. Creative kiddos thoroughly enjoyed the “Paint the Paint Horse” Activity that was sponsored by Hold Your Horses Equestrian Team. Kids had the opportunity to interact with a few patient Paint Horses who generously “consented” to be finger-painted for a good cause. Other fun events included the AjPHC Doggie Derby sponsored by Eye Care For Animals, theLunch Break Boot Scramble sponsored by Kimes Ranch, the AjPHC Silent Auction and Stallion Service Auction, and a jazz concert with Flavour, Bryne Donaldson, and Lawrence Ross.
