The APHA Zone 5 Show recently took place April 24-25 in Cedar Rapids, IA. to the delight of APHA competitors in the Midwest, since the 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID-19. The APHA Zone 5 consists of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Judges included Sandy Curl, Gayle Lampinen, Stephanie McConnell, and Cindy Wolverton.
One of the fun events at the show was the presentation of scholarships for Zone 5 APHA members pursuing a college degree. In order to qualify, the APHA member must live within one of the Zone 5 states, be enrolled in college full-time with a minimum of 12 credit hours, and have at least a 2.5 GPA. For 2021, there were three $700 scholarships available to be awarded in each of the states within Zone 5 with a potential maximum of 15 scholarships. $10,500 was awarded this year!
In addition, there were speciality Zone 5 Limited classes. In order to be eligible, competitors must reside in a Zone 5 state, not have placed in the Top 5 at the World Show, nor in the Honor Roll, in the class they’re competing in, during a time period of the past three years. Classes included Non Pro Showmanship, Novice Non Pro Showmanship, Novice Non Pro Western Pleasure, Non Pro Western Pleasure, Non Pro Walk Trot Western Pleasure, and Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle.
