Pat Heeley Pilots The Immortal Rose to a Win in 3-Year-Old and Over Limited Horse Western Pleasure at 2013 Reichert Celebration

Filed under: Club & Show News |

It was a close contest, but in the end it was the impeccable turnout and consistency of Pat Heeley’s ride aboard The Immortal Rose that gave him the edge over the competition in this evening’s Harris Leather and Silverworks 3-Year-Old and Over Limited Horse Western Pleasure at the 2013 Reichert Celebration. The judges that were randomly selected to judge tonight’s competition were Dean Bogart, Robin Griggs, Murray Griggs, and Kim Myers.

For Heeley’s win with “Rosie,” a three-year-old mare by The Immortal and out of a daughter of Zippo Jack Bar, he and owner Robert Roger received a check for $3,850, a $500 maiden bonus check, a Reichert Celebration custom buckle, a Harris Leather and Silverworks show saddle, and a free breeding to Born To Be Blazing. That’s quite the haul considering that Heeley didn’t get Rosie in training until the very last day of the NSBA World Show.

“I got her three weeks ago,” Heeley says. “She’s been super-easy and good-minded. She’s really fun to show. She didn’t get looky and didn’t do anything wrong.”

“I was at the NSBA World, and they had her there. They were riding her around, and she looked really cute. They asked me the last day of the show if I wanted to take her home and do the maiden with her. I said I’d give it a try.”

That last minute decision proved to be the right one as this was Heeley’s first win in a maiden class at the Reichert Celebration. He came in Reserve two other times. Although this class has historically been known as the 3-Year-Old Maiden Western Pleasure, it received a little update this year when the decision was made to allow non-maiden horses to compete. However, to keep with the original intention of rewarding exhibitors for showing a maiden horse, a bonus incentive was made available. In fact, the top five placing horses tonight were all maiden mounts.

“I like the maiden stuff,” he says. “I think it’s a great idea, and I hope it gets bigger again. I really think it’s important. I think there are a number of reasons [why someone would choose to show a maiden horse]: if you have one that’s mentally a little immature as a two-year-old, strength, or soundness. Sometimes you just don’t want to push them hard. I think if we waited on more of these horses to be three or over to show I think we’d have a lot more horses last.”

Next up for The Immortal Rose is the 3-Year-Old Non Pro Western Pleasure at the 2013 All American Quarter Horse Congress in October.
“Robert’s wife Mary Ellen and daughter Mary Paul plan on showing her at the Congress in the Three-Year-Old Non Pro and possibly tomorrow,” he says. “We haven’t decided yet.”
Coming in a close second to Heeley was Jeff Long and Only Happens for Gale Remington. Rounding out the top three was Greg Wheat with RR Moonlite Memories.
