Halter enthusiasts from around the country flocked to Des Moines, Iowa, September 8–11 for the Breeders Halter Futurity, one of the highlights of the halter community’s show calendar. With approximately $1.5 million up for grabs, exhibitors brought their best to compete.

New to the show this year, the Breeders Halter Futurity Color Division was a smash hit with 30 stallions enrolled and strong turnout in the Open and Amateur divisions.

“I think it was a great thing to add a color division for the BHF. Both Paints and Appaloosas were very well represented, particularly for the first year,” Breeders Halter Futurity Spokeswoman Karen Kennedy said. “Our numbers were good, and we paid out a lot of money.”

Amateurs who compete at BHF and the APHA World Championship Show in 2017 are also eligible for an additional $20,000 payout, new this year thanks to a partnership between BHF and APHA. Exhibitors in Amateur Weanling Colts, Amateur Weanling Mares, Amateur Weanling Geldings, Amateur Solid-Paint Bred Weanling Colts/Geldings and Amateur Solid Paint-Bred Weanling Mares have the opportunity to win big at the APHA World Show.

One of the standout stallions at BHF this year was Intensions, a 2010 red roan overo stallion owned by Billy Franks of Cisco, Texas. Bred by Mark Voegele, Intensions’ get earned more than $42,000 over the course of the 2016 Breeders Halter Futurity.

“We think Intensions is a Paint stallion with a great future ahead of him in the halter industry,” Three Nails Ranch Equine owner Suzonne Franks said. “We are so thankful for everyone who bred to him in 2015 to get these foals in the ring for 2016, and we are looking forward to breeding season this year!”
