Although 17-year-old Avery Langley hasn’t been in the game quite as long as her fellow competitors, this spunky, savvy, smart, young woman is using all of the skills at her disposal to make a name for herself, and she has big plans for the future.
Avery began competing on the AQHA show circuit just four years ago. She established a riding foundation with Shon Gage and Tom McBeath, with a leased show horse, before transitioning to one of her very own. Kinetic Krymsun, aka “Gib,” is now her partner for all-around classes like Horsemanship, Western Riding, Trail, Showmanship, Equitation, and Hunter Under Saddle. During their first trip to the Quarter Horse Congress in 2019, they won Novice Youth 14-18 Hunter Under Saddle and were the Reserve All-Around Youth team and Novice Youth team. Gib is currently returning from an injury, but he will be back for the 2021 Congress. In the meantime, Avery has two new horses to show, under the guidance of trainers Leonard and Leigh Berryhill.
“The Berryhills haven’t just taught me lessons about horses and equestrian skills,” Avery says. “They’ve also taught me life lessons, and that’s why I really appreciate them the most. They’ve really pushed me to be my very best and taught me to keep my options open in new classes that I might not have tried before. They always encourage me to continue working on those events that maybe aren’t my strongest.
“One thing we talk about is that it’s not all about winning. I need to do my best and focus on improvement each time I go into the pen. They’ve taught me to practice like I’m competing and compete like I’m practicing. They’ve made me into the rider I am today.”
