A brand new horse show event was created over the weekend by our very own Glenda Roberts at the Arizona Sun Country Circuit! The name of the event has been dubbed “Cowmanship” by our 6-year-old daughter.

This event started as a regular Novice Amateur Showmanship class and was elevated to a whole new level when an escapee steer from the Equidome found his way into The Equine Chronicle arena right in the middle of Glenda’s set-up and quartering for the judges! Thankfully, Glenda’s horse “Maddy,” aka First Time Everytime, never moved a muscle and stayed perfectly set up the entire time the steer ran right past her and the judges and while two cowboys rode into the arena and herded the steer out! Although Glenda didn’t win the class, the entire audience applauded her performance as she exited the arena. We thought Glenda should have won the first ever “Cowmanship” class! We’re so proud of you, Glenda!

Here’s a little more about Glenda… she is a true novice and this is only her second year of showing horses at AQHA shows. Her horse had never seen a steer in its life, and Glenda had no idea what to do or what the horse would do. She didn’t even know the steer was there until the ring steward told her to just stand still and not move.

Fred Fisher is the trainer and owner of Light Rein LLC Performance Horses, and I am his wife, Molly. I was also in Glenda’s class, and I was standing in the arena watching her go when the steer came through. I thought to myself, “Of all people, why did this have to happen during Glenda’s run?” Then I thought, “Please, Glenda, just let Maddy go if she freaks out…”

We are very protective of Glenda, and we do not want to see her hurt, especially at her age. Luckily, Maddy was absolutely perfect and never moved a muscle. When Glenda finished her run and came back to the area where we were all standing, I gave her a huge hug, laughed and said, “You will NEVER forget this day!” She was shaking, but so proud of Maddy. Also, as a side note, Maddy had just won the performance halter mares class earlier that day.
