Animal Health Advisory
(May 20th, 2015)
INDIANAPOLIS—In spite of rampant rumors permeating social media, Indiana has NO cases of EVH-1 (equine herpes virus) or EHM (equine herpes myeloencephalopathy) under investigation or quarantine. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) has been receiving many phone calls, emails and messages to ask about status of horses in the state and assess the safety of traveling to Hoosier venues. Much of the information seems to stem from inaccurate social media reporting and confusion about infected animals at shows.
BOAH continues to monitor the situation in other states, where the disease has been surfacing.
As always the agency advises horse owners to practice sound biosecurity at home and away—especially in locations where horses are gathered together or commingled. Managers of equine events/shows and facilities are advised to do the same.
