Although he didn’t make the trip to Oklahoma City for the 2014 AQHA World Championship Show, AQHA stallion Mr. Elusive was still able to claim a big win this afternoon during the WCHA Get-Of-Sire class. Mr. Elusive is a 1998 bay stallion by Telusive and out of Forever My Temon; he is owned by Tim and Janet Meyer of Sylvan Grove, Kansas.

For those who’ve never had the opportunity to watch a Get-Of-Sire class, the premise is simple. Three horses of varying ages and genders are selected to make up one entry. The horses enter as a group and line up next to a numbered sign in the arena to be judged. Stallions participating in the class this afternoon included Chromed Up, I Gotta Cool Secret, Mr Elusive, Very Cool, and Self Employed.

Very Cool’s entry

We had the chance to speak with Tim Meyer following his stallion’s big win this afternoon. The horses and handlers representing Mr. Elusive today included Ecredible, My Finishing Touch, and Dreams Big Dreams with Ted Turner, Randy Jacobs, and Thomas Coon at the lead.

“This used to be a great class years ago,” Meyer says. “The Get-Of-Sire class was always a big deal; it was something everyone looked forward to, but it kind of fell out of favor. It generates some buzz, and it’s fun; that’s the big thing. It’s great to win, but it’s just fun to have the horses out there and see what some of these stallions are producing.”

“We had several horses to pick from, and we were lucky enough that we could just close our eyes and pick. We picked some great ones; they were all World Champions.”

Meyer believes today’s entry reflected Mr. Elusive’s qualities and characteristics perfectly. There’s a lot of consistency to the body type and muscle, and even color somewhat, even though one is sorrel. Overall, the form to function and the stability of the horses, as far as the structure, was very consistent with all three.”

What makes this particular class at the World Show even more fun is that the audience is invited to participate as the fifth judge. During the class, the crowd is encouraged to vote for their favorite entry by texting a specific number on their cell-phones.

The audience was instructed to make their decision based on several criteria including balance, eye appeal, structural correctness, breed and gender characteristics, manners, and quality of muscling. Following the conclusion of the class, the announcer indicated that 150 votes were registered from the stands, and those votes were tabulated into the final judges’ scores to determine the overall placings.

“I think it’s very cool, because it sort of helps put a stamp of approval, let’s call it,” he says. “It’s thrilling when people appreciate what you’re doing. I just want to try to produce horses that will be an improvement and a credit to the breed going forward, and Mr. Elusive is certainly doing that and has done it.”
