phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg-1Oklahoma City, Okla. – June 24, 2013 – NRHA press release by: Christa Morris – The 2013 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby held its third day of competition on June 24 including the first go, first section of the $185,000-added Non Pro Derby and five ancillary classes for open and rookie riders. Although entries are still being accepted in the schedule’s remaining ancillary classes, all signs indicate that the event will surpass last year’s numbers in terms of overall entries, purse and NRHA Nomination Program payout to owners and nominators.

Early in today’s competition the pace was set with a 221.5. Mandy McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) and Always Gotyer Gunsup (Gunner x Always A Dunit, $152,400 NRHA LTE) earned the top score from the judges and lead the first go-round, first section of the level 4 non pro division. The NRHA Million Dollar Rider and Always Gotyer Gunsup are continuing on a successful partnership thus far winning the 2012 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Level 4 Non Pro Championship, 2012 NRHA Derby Level 4 Non Pro Reserve Championship and 2013 NRBC Level 4 Non Pro Reserve Championship. McQuay Stables, Inc., of Tioga, Texas, owns the 2007 mare.

Just one-half point behind the leader (221) was Carin Valcich (Whiteboro, Texas) aboard Wimpys All Jacked Up (Wimpys Little Step x Docs Twinkle Jac). They arrived in Oklahoma City following a reserve championship showing in the level 4, level 3 and level 2 non pro divisions at the 2013 Carolina Classic Derby. Valcich owns the 2009 mare with $21,370 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings. They lead the level 3 and level 2 non pro divisions.

Leading the level 1 non pro and youth non pro divisions was Meloney Morris (Memphis, Tenn.) and Peacemaker Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Meerly Chic Olena) with a 220.5. The 2007 gelding, owned by Morris, has accumulated $19,790 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings.

In the prime time division, Susan Flynn (Ashland, Ky.) and Colonel Tinseltown (Gunner x Dun It In Tinseltown, $27,840 NRHA LTE) sit atop the leaderboard with a handicapped score of 219. Flynn ($117,570 NRHA LTE) and the 2007 gelding won three reserve championships at the 2012 Adequan North American Affiliate Championship Show.
