2013 marked the first year that the Western Dressage Association of America hosted a World Championship Show. Two days of competition in Tulsa, OK on November 2-3 welcomed horses and riders from 10 states and 2 Canadian provinces. More than 12 breeds were represented in four different levels of tests for youth, amateur and open riders.
Lynn Palm and Larks Home Run along with owner Elizabeth Stauber-Johnson of Duluth, MN, made the journey from Ocala, FL to Tulsa, OK to earn their place in history at the first ever WDAA World Championship Show. Larks Home Run, an American Quarter Horse and the last own son of the renowned Rugged Lark, is a USDF All Breed Award winner, USDF Regional Championship Qualifier and AQHA Dressage Champion.
Now, Palm and Larks Home Run add WDAA World Champion to their resume. In two days of competition, the pair earned four World Championships in three different levels, Basic, Level 1 and Level 2. Having been rewarded by USEF S dressage judge, Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez with test scores in the 70s as well as one 81% was quite an honor.
As a trainer with a background in classical dressage, Palm notes that, “In western dressage, I see many similarities to classical dressage. I am pleased to see the horse performing tasks correctly according to his conformation and fitness. And, I could not be happier with Homer in living up to his inheritance!”
As an owner and new competitor to the western dressage world, Stauber-Johnson sums up her experience by saying, “In the competition, specific pieces of classical dressage were melded with the traditional western way of going as well as tack and attire. The horses were just beautiful! Thank you to WDAA for this wonderful opportunity, for all of their hard work, patience and preparation. And most importantly for the spotlight they have put on dressage for western horses!”
For those competitors who like patterns and appreciate a progressive training scale to develop a happy balanced horse, stepping into the dressage ring and mastering a pattern-like test will have riders hooked on dressage. Like horsemanship, hunt seat equitation, trail and western riding riders can execute a test with finesse, accuracy and fluidity. The partnerships and progression of training in dressage is priceless to correct riding and training!
