Sometimes, when it comes to horse shows and unpredictable weather conditions, you just have to Let It Ride. That was certainly the case at the Kansas Quarter Horse Youth Association’s Let It Ride Circuit that took place over the weekend at the brand new complex at the Kansas Star Casino and Arena.
Nichole Chirico of Broke Girls Equine Management was pleased to report that the event completely sold out stalls in the permanent barn, and tents had to be added to accommodate the influx of competitors.
“Unfortunately, Kansas was very rainy this week, and some of the tent stalls flooded,” Chirico says. “Broke Girls Equine Management and several of the facility’s staff actually had to tear down stalls and rebuild 30 of them in the warm-up arena, so we could accommodate some of the people that had originally been placed in the tents.”
“This was the first time we had a show at the Kansas Star Casino and Arena, and everyone who attended said how much they loved the facility. We know that with the addition of more permanent stalls, which we hope are in the works, that this show could grow to be very large! The hotel and casino are attached to the arena, so it’s definitely a plus, that in the morning, you can walk over to the arena. There were some great restaurants at the casino including a very good steakhouse, and everyone had a blast at the casino as well.”
Despite the adverse weather conditions, the Let It Ride circuit was full of fun social events, fabulous prizes, and big class sizes. The Kansas Quarter Horse Youth Association held a Silent Auction Fundraiser and an entertaining Ride A Buck Bareback event. With a $5 entry fee, the winner was supposed to split the jackpot with KQHYA. However, the winner, Erin Hart, was kind enough to donate her portion back to the club.
Youth competitors had a blast during the Exhibitors’ Party where pancake caterer Chris Cakes flipped pancakes with speed and precision. In order to taste their fabulous flapjacks, you must catch the cake as it flies through the air! We love their company motto, “How many flips would a flapjack flip, if a flapjack flipper flipped the flapjacks?”
“Everyone seemed to have a blast with the pancake flipping, and I heard they were very delicious,” Chirico says.
When it came time for the competition, winning exhibitors were rewarded with gift cards from iTunes, Amazon, Sephora, McDonald’s, Subway, Chili’s, Applebee’s, and Target, which were presented in Novice, Youth, and Amateur classes. In addition, there were random gift card drawings in Senior Trail and Performance Halter classes. Show vendors like Candies Creations and Country Rouge Boutique also donated gift cards. Circuit champions received $10 gift certificates to Logan’s Western Supply and supplements from Motion Source by Progressive Nutrition.
“In our Halter classes, we had a ‘money bag’ that had over $300 in it,” Chirico says. “Each exhibitor that participated in Halter classes got a chance at winning some money. There were $1’s, $20’s, a few $50’s, and a $100 bill in there as well!”
“Other prizes we gave away were water bottles, towels, t-shirts, boot polisher, and tote bags. We also had really nice leather bags as all-around prizes that were given away to the High Point Open Horse, Novice Youth, Novice Amateur, Amateur, and Select. We also put everyone who was stalled in the tents into a random drawing to give away one of the leather bags, and the winner was Matt and Carli Armenta.”
The largest class of the horse show was Senior Trail with a whopping 40 entries. Senior Western Pleasure and Green Western Pleasure were three point classes, and Performance Halter classes were 2-3 points each. Youth all around events tended to be in the 3-4 point range.
