Congratulations are in order for Jeff and Jodi Geiger of Ohio on their purchase of the great stallion, Strutin On The Range.
The 16-hand 2008 AQHA roan by the late OpenRange and out of Time For Kathy, by Time to Strut, already has quite a following as a sire and for his accomplishments as a Superior Western Pleasure earner. For example, he won the 2011 Congress in Green Western Pleasure, earned the 2012 Congress Reserve Championship in Junior Western Pleasure, and won a Bronze at the 2012 AQHA World Show – all with Jay Starnes in the saddle.
The Geigers will be celebrating Strutin On the Range becoming an official Ohio resident by hosting a meet and greet party at the 2023 All American Quarter Horse Congress on October 14th from 7-9 PM at Stall 152 in the O’Neill Building, and all are invited to join them.
He will actually be there October 13-15, and don’t be surprised if you hear the Geigers call him “Ranger” and “Strut” interchangeably because, they explain, they already have a bit of a roan collection at home.
“He came with the barn name of Ranger,” says Jeff. “But my daughter, Riley Geiger, has an Open Range gelding called Hotroddin Ona Ranger who has done very well, and his barn name is Ranger. We’ve had him a little longer, and I’m old school about changing the name.”
They tossed around the idea of using Big Ranger and Little Ranger, but neither horse wanted the Little Ranger title, so his barn name remains Ranger, but his nickname is Strut.
Jodi says it was Riley’s horse that peaked the Geiger’s interest in those bloodlines, and Jeff explains as a trainer of 40 years, he’s always been interested in horses of that caliber. “We like his breeding, and his conformation, and his looks,” he reveals, “and what a wonderful disposition he has,” adds Jodi.
Jeff and Jodi happened to be in Florida this year at Shane Ledford’s looking at another horse for Jeff to show in longe line at the 2023 Congress, R U Thinking About Me.
The stars seemed to align, as they were informed by Shane of Olivia Hoecker’s plan to sell Strut, who was also in Florida at Pine Meadow Quarter Horses. But Olivia was extremely particular about where he was going. “Shane knew we would take care of his legacy, and that was important to Olivia, and it was significant to us she trusted us,” says Jeff, and before long, Strutin On The Range was theirs.
Though they’ve had much-appreciated offers from several stallion stations across the country to stand Strut, their decision to stand him with Don and Melanie Griffey of Griffey Equine Center in Pataskala, Ohio, holds more than one special meaning for the Geigers.
Not only did they want to introduce him to mare owners in their part of the country, but Jeff says his old school tendencies added another dimension. “There are a wide range of people who want to see the horse close up,” he says, and he and Jodi explain his fans have already been visiting from other areas.
They’re also looking forward to furthering Strut’s familiarity with all-around exhibitors and breeders. “He has 138 registered foals, with 70 performance point earners and 50 are ROM earners – and almost $70,000 in AQHA and NSBA earnings. That’s a good percentage, but it also means people aren’t aware of his strong bloodlines,” says Jeff.
Strut’s offspring have earned major titles in Halter, Western Pleasure, Hunter Hack, Pleasure Driving, Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Showmanship, and Longe Line, and his fans have been reveling in the success of one of his diverse offspring in the past few years, Rodger Call’s Strutin the Blues. The 2016 gray gelding boasts many recent impressive titles in his dossier, such as the Reserve Farnam Superhorse at the 2020 AQHA World Show, and the 2022 Champion All-Around Horse at the 2022 All American Quarter Horse Congress.
The Geigers have also been made aware from their son, Ryan Geiger, of several Strut horses showing in Ranch through his role as official photographer at the American Ranch Horse Association World Show, and they know of two Strut horses showing in Hunter Under Saddle this year at Congress, a strong testament to Strut’s versatility as a sire. He’s also passing along that wonderful disposition.
“Your average amateur or youth likes to show in multiple classes,” says Jodi, “and they’re looking for horses that are versatile.” In fact, though most of their customers used to have three or four horses at an event, they explain the pendulum seems to be swinging back toward exhibitors having a horse that can do multiple events and compete at a higher level. “He seems to be siring that,” explains Jeff, “and we want to gear his marketing toward his proven ability to produce variety.”
Strut is currently enrolled in Super Sires, the NSBA Incentive Program, and Roan to Riches.
Mare owners and fans can look him up on his Facebook page, his soon-to-come Instagram page, and more of his impressive record can be found on the Super Sires website: https://supersires.org/Super-Sires/strutin-on-the-range/
His stallion contract will also be available on the Griffey Equine Center website: griffeyequinecenter.com.
Better yet, everyone is invited to meet Strut, and book a breeding contract at his party on October 14th at the All American Quarter Horse Congress! They’ll also be able to meet Strutin My Best, aka “Little Strut,” their weanling colt they bought from Jill Finley of Noble Hill Farms – he’s their 2024 longe line prospect By Strutin on the Range and out of TJ Whoopi Im Lopin (Lopin My Best).
