Inspiring Trailblazers: Women of the American Quarter Horse

In honor of Women’s History Month in March, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas, is sharing the history of women’s impact on the American Quarter Horse breed and Association in the temporary exhibit “Inspiring Trailblazers: Women of the American Quarter Horse.”
This exhibit, revamped from 2016’s “The Bold and Beautiful,” features the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame women who left their marks on the American Quarter Horse as breeders, owners, trainers, competitors, chroniclers, leaders and visionaries, opening the door for others.
Since 1940, the American Quarter Horse Association has paved a way for passionate horsemen and horsewomen to come together in the name of the American Quarter Horse for the breed’s preservation, celebration and advancement. From the beginning, women have been involved with AQHA; from stakeholders to elected directors, women helped in the creation of AQHA.
The 16 women who are members of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame are highlighted in this exhibit. Trailblazers in the American Quarter Horse industry, these women include:

- Anne Marion
- Betty Nix
- Carol Harris
- Carol Rose
- Georga Sutton
- Ginger Hyland
- Harriet Peckham
- Helen Michaelis
- Johne Dobbs
- Mildred Janowitz
- Mrs. Fisher E. Simmons
- Nancy Dear
- Sandy Vaughn
- Suzanne Jones
“While these women’s achievements are in our Hall of Fame, they are not the only women who have inspired others and led the way for future professionals in the industry,” said Laura Owens, Foundation programs manager. “This exhibit gives the opportunity to add a woman who has inspired you to our inspiration wall, leaving a note or photo of a woman who has inspired their love for the American Quarter Horse.”
The exhibit, “Inspiring Trailblazers: Women of the American Quarter Horse,” is on display for a limited time.
