In Loving Memory of Lee Paul Shinn

Our sincerest condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of well-known trainer, Lee Paul Shinn, who passed away yesterday.

In 2017, we had the unique opportunity to help Lee Paul tell the story of his journey from drug addiction to 13 years sober. The story was an interview at the 2017 NSBA World Show, after he won a World Championship with Metallic Iron, the first horse that he had trained from start to finish, while sober. He often spoke fondly of all of the friends and colleagues who helped him along the way, like Sandy Vaughn, Andy Mormon, Rick Skelly, Mark Stevens, Debbie Laredos, Jerry Erickson,  Chester and Ann Prince, and more.

We like to remember Lee Paul best with this quote from his last article.

“Because of this, I’m a stronger person. I’m more dedicated. I’m happier in my own skin. I’m a better person now than I was before, and, as a result, I have also become a better horse trainer. Before, everything was always about me. Now, it’s about the horse and what I can give them. I wake up every day filled with gratitude, determined to be the best person I can be that day. My philosophy is simple: I try to learn from my mistakes and give my best to the people and horses around me.”

Details about a funeral and Celebration of Life will be forthcoming.
