Helpful Horse Show Hints For Novice Riders

Many of our clients have already headed south for the winter show circuits. Here are some tips on bringing your success to the show grounds.

  • Be over-prepared: Be sure to have all necessary paperwork, tack, and equipment for you and your horse. Using a checklist ensures preparedness, and don’t forget your Coggins!
  • Warm your horse up, but don’t burn him out. Save his energy for the show ring.
  • Longing prior to the show ring is sometimes a good way to expend extra energy to ensure your horse is quiet when he enters the ring.
  • As some of you may be in warm weather while showing, make sure you and your horse stay cool and hydrated. Be sure to offer your horse water regularly and remember not to share buckets with other horses.
  • Make sure you and your horse are clean and well-groomed. One tip is to always have a rag on hand for any last minute polishes for you and your horse.
  • Prepare mentally as much as you do physically. Being relaxed will help your horse relax, and visualizing how you want your round to be will help you be more prepared mentally.
  • Know your horse and take precautions in the warm up pen, by the gate, or any areas of high traffic.
  • Your day is not over when you leave the ring. Make sure to cool your horse down and take care of him properly before you relax.
  • Very important- remember to have fun! This is an opportunity for you and your horse to learn and improve. Celebrate small wins, not just blue ribbons!

On behalf of Pulse Vet, we wish everyone competing a safe and successful show season.
