American Pharoah has done the seemingly impossible. He has become the 12th Triple Crown winner and the first since Affirmed in 1978.
For those who haven’t been keeping track, it’s been 37 years since we’ve had a Triple Crown winner. During that time, 13 horses have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes only to be defeated at the Belmont. Horses like Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), Smarty Jones (2004), Big Brown (2008), and California Chrome (2014) have all tried their hardest but come up short at the end.
Now, the 1 1/2 mile Belmont caps off the third leg of the Triple Crown and a seven race win streak for American Pharoah after spectacular performances at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes earlier this year.
Congratulations trainer Bob Baffert and American Pharoah!
