Of course, Halloween wouldn’t be complete without reliving the tale that inspired Washington Irving to create his classic, spooky story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which features our favorite equine Halloween character of all time, the Headless Horseman.

In case you’re not familiar with the story, legend has it, on a chilly winter night in New York, a Dutchman was headed home from frequenting his favorite Tarrytown tavern when he came across the Sleepy Hollow cemetery. The Dutchman was frightened because he remembered hearing stories of a galloping horse and rider that haunted the area.

All of a sudden, through the mist, the Dutchman witnessed a ghostly apparition that rose from an unmarked grave. As the horse and rider galloped towards him, the Dutchman desperately ran to a nearby bridge for safety. It was then that he noticed the rider was wearing the uniform of a Hessian commander…
