By the time you read this commentary, we’ll have entered the new year and the new season of shows will be in full swing. Whether you’re showing outside in areas with a warmer climate or indoors where the snow is flying, my guess is you are happy to be where your horse is while competing amongst those who love horses as much as you do.
As I read the articles in this issue, a common theme emerged. Nearly every competitor we interviewed–whether professional, amateur or youth–got their start in a similar fashion. They were all horse-crazy kids at an early age. Some had parents with a similar passion and others didn’t, but they all ended up astride a horse or pony.
The next obvious step was competition. Some started in 4-H or open shows, or both. Others skipped that step and jumped into the big leagues at Quarter Horse, Paint, Appaloosa, or other breed-sanctioned shows. However, no matter where they started, they ended up in the same place–the highest levels of the sport competing for World and Congress championships.
