AjPHA youth competitors have much more than shiny buckles and blue ribbons at stake this morning at the 2014 AjPHA Youth World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. Halter exhibitors will be competing to take home more than $30,000 in scholarship money.
Up to 60 scholarships will be presented, based on the number of entries in each class, and scholarship money will be awarded through sixth place. The World Champion in each halter class will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Other scholarships to be presented throughout the show include the new Power Performance Scholarship, Superior Sportsmanship Scholarship, Judging Contest Scholarship, All-Around Youth Scholarship, and Boot Camp Scholarship.
The generous group of scholarship sponsors for 2014 include: Donna & Melissa Ashby, Bobbie & Henry Atkinson, Ray Barton Show Horses, Joe & Nancy Berry, Frank & Cyndee Bognar, Richard Burns/Burns Skyview Ranch, Ramona Caldwell, Bob & Joyce Cassata, the Fred Cole Family, Tom Crowley, Kelley Deignan-Stone, Carolyn & Tim Dobbins/The Goldmine Circuit, Daranne Folino, Tommy & Judy Ford, Sally & Maggie Griffin, H & H Industries/the Rick Howerton Family, Dorothy & Lacy Harbor, Stacy & Terry Kull, LTF Ford/Fred Cole, Erin Matte, Butch & Lisa Maxwell, Rick McLain, Ingrid McPherson, Melinda Minnis, Larry Morse & Robin Robinett, Lauren Roden, The Nightingale Family, Charlie Sasser Show Horses, Walt & Annie Schobel, Dave & Jackie Weatherman, Priscilla & John T. Whalen, Anita Wiescamp, Bruce Wilson, Kevin & Nancy Smith/Rockin’ Bar S Paint Horses, Lance & Leah Jordan, Permian Basin Paint Horse Club, and Hart Trailers.
Taking home the first check and World Champion title this morning was Colton Stewart with Call Me Exciting in Youth Yearling Mares. The pair won a $1,000 scholarship along with an award buckle and neck ribbon. 11-year-old Colton of Sugarland, TX. led his yearling filly, “Rita,” to his very first AjPHA title this morning. Colton has been competing on the AQHA circuit for three years now, but this is his first year competing with a Paint Horse.
Colton and Rita are trained by Ted Turner and received some extra guidance this morning from JT Mitchell. Although his trainer wasn’t able to be here this morning, Colton can’t wait to call and give him the exciting news.
“He found her and asked if I liked her,” Colton says. “She is big and really pretty. She never acts up, and she’s really calm.”
Rita, a double registered filly, and her young handler have been a team for the past six months, and they have been named the Champion or Reserve Champion every time they’ve competed.
Around the barn, Colton’s friends call him TT3, that’s because he plans on being just like Ted Turner when he grows up. Currently, he’s debating whether he should become an NBA basketball star or a horse trainer.
Colton and Rita have also qualified to compete at the 2014 AQHYA World Show in August. He also plans to show his 3-year-old gelding, HR Secret E.
Next, in an impressive class of yearling geldings, Carley Rinn led Why Keep Secrets to a win and a $1,000 scholarship. Coming in Reserve was Aubrey Schobel with Admire Me Too, who won a $750 scholarship.
Then, in the Youth Solid Paint Bred All Age Mares, the adorable Aubrey Schobel led Far Too Glamorous to a win. Coming in Reserve was Mason Burns with Far Too Delicious.
