As you prepare to hit the road for the next show,  there’s a list of necessities that accompany your horse for every trip:

•Grain and hay
• Blankets and sheets
• Tack and equipment
• Health records and a Coggins test

A Coggins test. Every year it’s another cost that you must pay to your veterinarian, and every year the result is always the same: Negative.

Every horse in your barn gets the same test every year, and every year the result is always the same for every horse: Negative.

So, what’s the point of testing when you already know the answer?

“All 50 states have laws that require every horse owner entering their state from another state to test their horse for EIA,” says Angela Pelzel McCluskey, DVM, MS, equine epidemiologist with the USDA and APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) Veterinary Services in Fort Collins, Colorado. “Some states additionally have change of ownership test requirements and/or assembly point test requirements.”
