EC Photo of the Day: An Equine Moon!

Moon web2If you were up very late last night (or very early this morning) you had the opportunity to witness a phenomenon that hasn’t been seen in over 150 years. According to Aol Accuweather, this is the first time a blue moon, super moon, and lunar eclipse has fallen on the same night, in over 150 years.

The full moon rose Tuesday evening and set around daybreak this morning. While a Blue Moon can appear blue, the term actually refers to an additional full moon that appears within a certain time period. The likelihood of a Blue Moon is once every 2.7 years. Visit Space.com to find out more about the Blue Moon.

Moon webBecause this Blue Moon also coincided with a lunar eclipse, during the early morning hours, the moon actually appeared red, sometimes described as a Blood Moon. That’s because the atmosphere filtered out most of the sun’s blue light.

We were lucky enough to receive two incredible photos of the moon, courtesy of Michael Clevenger, who works for the Louisville Courier Journal in Kentucky. Enjoy!
