They say it takes a village to raise a child and, in Courtney Brockmueller’s case, it takes a village to win a World Championship title as well. Four generations of the Ryan family were present to witness her big win this afternoon with Allocate In Blue in the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle at the 2013 AQHA World Show. Brockmueller’s grandmother, “Nana,” and mother and horse trainer, Nancy Sue Ryan, watched proudly in the stands as “Big Sky” helped their girl win the World Championship title. The fourth generation was there in the form of unborn “Baby Brim Allen Brockmueller,” who is due on February 14th, 2014.

“They are actually wanting to have him earlier,” she says. “The doctor said probably early February. I’m a little over 27 weeks.”

Although her doctor wasn’t necessarily thrilled about Brockmueller’s decision to compete in the finals today, there was no way she was missing this opportunity.

“When you [ride] every day, your body is conditioned for it,” she says. “The pregnancy has been ok. I’ve just been having a hard time staying healthy, probably with just being tired and run down at horse shows. We were at the doctor this morning, and he was throwing a fit, but I wasn’t going to miss this.”

“Everything is ok. I just couldn’t breathe [very well]. When you are pregnant, your body does weird things. I’ve never been allergic to horses or anything before, but now they think I’ve developed allergies. They gave me a breathing treatment, and I was as good as new. Basically, we were bossing around the nurses saying, ‘Let’s sprinkle some andale on this. We’ve got to go!’ We were scheduled to go at 2:30, and then they said we were going to show at 12:30.”

Brockmueller’s partner for the class today was her three-year-old gray gelding by Allocate Your Assets and out of a Skys Blue Boy mare named Exotic In Blue. She purchased “Big Sky” last September and has been campaigning him in 3-year-old futurities and amateur hunter under saddle classes throughout the year.

“This is actually one we ventured out and purchased,” she says. “It’s been a long time since we’ve done that. We don’t usually ever buy geldings, but mom was really crazy about him and I really love having three-year-olds. We took a gamble, but it worked out.”

“I’ve always believed in this horse, but I didn’t know when he would believe in himself enough to be a show horse at this level. I came in here with an overall goal of top ten and a personal dream of top five. Mom has been riding him for me, because I’ve been feeling bad and haven’t been able to ride. She has done a great job with him, and he’s really figured it out.”

There are several people Brockmueller would like to thank following her win this afternoon.

“I want to thank Mom for doing such a great job with him and Mark [my husband] for being so understanding about the commitment it takes at this level with a horse like this. I want to thank all my friends and family, the people I couldn’t be doing this without, because it takes village.”
