The second annual NSBA Kaplow Insurance Breeders Championship Futurity Yearling Sale will be held Friday, August 15, 2014 during the NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity and World Championship Show at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Consignment and sale agent forms as well as absentee bidder forms are now available on the NSBA website. To access them, go to the World Show tab at the top of the nsba.com home page and then select Yearling Sale on the drop-down menu. The 2014 consignment deadline is June 1.

The second annual NSBA Kaplow Insurance Breeders Championship Futurity Yearling Sale has already generated a great deal of interest from potential buyers and consignors, said Allen Mitchels, NSBA first vice president and sale manager.

“The success of last year’s sale and the nearly $70,000 in purse money for the graduates of that sale has created a lot of excitement for the 2014 sale,” Mitchels said. “Everyone we visit with is anxious to put their best yearling in the sale, and we have had several requests for the list of buyers from last year. The purse and its distribution is doing exactly what we had hoped—creating a long-term program for NSBA that will serve our members well. We are also very thankful to Kaplow Insurance for being the title sponsor of our sale.”

Competing for Extra Cash

As explained in the December issue of The Way To Go, the 67 yearlings that graduated from the NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity Yearling Sale this past August will have the opportunity to compete for $68,500 in addition to their BCF class earnings at the NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity over the next two years. Sale graduates will still be eligible to compete in BCF classes through their six-year-old year, however the sale monies will be distributed to horses competing in their two- and three-year-old years.

How the Purse Was Determined

The $68,500 total purse is made up of 50 percent of the commissions from sale horses, 100 percent of the buyer’s premiums and 30 percent of the consignment fees.

Decide Year of Competition

The current owners of the 67 sale graduates will have the choice to compete for the first half of the purse, $34,250, in a BCF class of their choice, during the horse’s two-year-old year in 2014, or choose to show for the second half of the purse, $34,250, by designating a BCF class during the horse’s three-year-old year in 2015.

Designate a Class

Current owners will designate one BCF class for the sale graduate to compete for part of the purse. Owners that choose a two-year-old BCF class to designate for their sale graduate could pick between:

• BCF Open Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Limited Open Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Color Open Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Non-Pro Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Limited Non-Pro Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Open Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Intermediate Open Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Limited Open Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Color Open Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Non-Pro Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Intermediate Non-Pro Two Year Old Western Pleasure

• or BCF Limited Non-Pro Two Year Old Western Pleasure.

Owners that choose to wait to designate their sale graduate in a three-year-old BCF class in 2015 will be able to choose from the following:

• BCF Open Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Limited Open Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Non-Pro Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle

• BCF Limited Non-Pro Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle.

• BCF Open Three Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Intermediate Open Three Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Limited Open Three Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure

• BCF Intermediate Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure

• or BCF Limited Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure.

Paying Out

The total purse of $68,500 will be paid to sale graduates. The purse will be divided 50 percent paid to the returning two year olds and 50 percent to the returning three year olds. A sale graduate may ride for their portion of the purse in either the two- or three-year-old year. In 2014, the purse of $34,250 will be divided by the number of sale graduates that place in their designated BCF class.

For example, if 20 sale graduates show and 10 place: $34,250 is divided by 10 equaling $3,425. If only one sale graduate places, he earns $3,425 in addition to his BCF payout check. If three sale graduates place in one class, their purse is three times $3,425, equaling $10,275. The highest placing graduate would receive 45 percent of $10,275, second highest placing graduate would receive 35 percent and third highest placing would receive 20 percent.

“Theoretically, if only one sale graduate shows up at the 2014 NSBA World Show in its designated class and places, it could earn the entire $34,250,” Mitchels said. “That’s highly unlikely. However, I can see classes where a number of sale graduates might compete for an additional purse of $7,000 to $10,000 in addition to their BCF earnings. I think it’s going to be very exciting.”

Consignors will receive 10 percent of the winnings earned by the sale graduate. It should be noted that 100 percent of the earnings will be recorded on the sale graduate’s lifetime NSBA earning records.
