Horse and rider pairs that compete in NRHA reining events run a pattern that is designed to show off the athletic ability of a ranch-type horse within a show arena. These patterns include both slow and fast circles, roll backs, spins, flying lead changes, and the crowd-favorite: sliding stops! Breyer’s NRHA 50th Anniversary model is appropriately shown executing this hallmark maneuver.

The first Olympic horses are settling into their athletes’ village – the newly built stables at the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Deodoro – with Team New Zealand’s Ringwood Skyboy winning the opening heat of the Rio 2016 Games as the first to set foot on Brazilian soil.

You may be wondering, why in the world is this an important topic? Aren’t judges more concerned with the horse and rider’s ability, not their hair? Well, you absolutely have reason to pause, and you’d be correct. Horse show hair is a priority that finds itself near the bottom of a list of things the judge is considering when evaluating riders in a competitive setting. However, a poor first impression is often attributed to minute details, such as hair.

This year, the Association facilitated more than 200 rides, which gave many youth the opportunity to ride an American Quarter Horse for the first time.
