“I began chatting with Kristy Starnes. I was so nervous, because I didn’t want to ask any dumb questions and make her think I was a babbling star struck idiot. I managed to keep my cool, and we had a nice chat. I never would’ve met these people unless I stepped outside of my comfort zone and spoke to them. I also realized that all of the people I met are a lot like you and I. We all started somewhere, and we all saddle up the same way.”

Over the weekend, two more PQS champions were crowned and presented with big checks. Winning the 3-Year-Old Limited Horse Limited Rider Hunter Under Saddle was Ryan Painter with Huntin All The Time for owner Ellie Seddon. The winner of the Limited Horse Limited Rider Non Pro Western Pleasure Maturity was Brooke Granzow with RR Final Approach for owner Sara Heeley.

Winning the class was Lara Yungclas aboard He’s Lazy No Doubt for owner Tanna Petersak. He’s Lazy No Doubt is by No Doubt I’m Lazy and out of Petite Seductress. The team took home $8,000 for the win. The Reserve Champion was Shelby Cochran aboard Winning Instincts, a horse sired by Sudden Instinct and out of Winners Always Flirt. The team was presented with a $5,000 for their second place finish.

Heatstroke obviously can happen if exercising in hot conditions, but be aware that it can also happen if standing in a hot stall or trailer. Signs of heat stroke can include: An elevated heart rate that does not return to normal in a reasonable period of time, excessive sweating OR lack of sweating, temperature that persists above 103 degrees F, depression, lethargy, signs of dehydration: dry mucous membranes, poor capillary refill, and poor skin turgor.

The main futurity event is the $5,000 Green Trail Futurity that will be run concurrently with Wednesday’s AQHA class. The entry fee is $350 upon arrival at the show. $2,500 will be awarded to both the winner of the Junior Green division and Senior Green division. Payouts will go six places deep in each division, as long as there is a minimum of five entries per class. Also, competitors must enter the corresponding AQHA class.

On May 24th, a very sick filly was flown by chartered aircraft from Walla Walla, Washington to Pullman, Washington, a distance of 72 miles by air, to receive immediate veterinary care from the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The foal, nicknamed “Patsy,” had been born just one day earlier but wasn’t nursing and had quickly taken a turn for the worse.

Especially the all-around classes are very big and strong; there’s up to 70 in Western Riding and Trail classes and all of those horses are high quality. Now that I’m really starting to get into all-around classes with my mare, Onlyafraid Inthedark, it’s great to have the opportunity to show to eight judges and to show three times per class at one show.
