“Unfortunately, we can’t have these horses forever. We wish we could though. I’m just thankful that he went fast and didn’t suffer. That’s always my first thought. For a Halter horse to have such a long lifespan, to me, is extraordinary. He was in great health until the very end and was never sick when he lived at our ranch. He was a sweetheart.”

Most studs have preferences, and Radical was no exception. He always liked to have a mare nearby him in the barn, and he favored sorrel mares. His favorite at Select Breeders was Tumbleweed, a long retired mare that was probably more than 30 years old herself. She was happy to have “the good life” in a stall near Radical to keep him content.

AQHA L1 Championship West Postponed Due to EHV Cases

“The No. 1 priority of AQHA is to protect the welfare of the horse,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “With the recent reports that horses in attendance at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stallion Stakes event have tested positive for EHV-1, it was necessary for the AQHA Executive Committee, Association staff, facility management and the state veterinarian of Nevada to evaluate whether we should move forward with holding this event. The South Point Arena and Equestrian Center has taken the appropriate biosecurity measures to clean and disinfect the facility. However, all parties involved with this decision believe it is the best option to postpone the show to protect the welfare of our exhibitors’ horses.”

An additional “twist” to the format of the class is that the exhibitors must be a limited non-pro. “A limited non-pro for these classes is defined as any amateur or youth exhibitor who has not won two AQHA World Championship titles in the last five years,”explains Falcon. AQHA Select World and AQHA Youth World Championship titles are exempt.
