Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Becomes a Prohibited Drug in AQHA

The AQHA Executive Committee recently voted to approve the recommendation by the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission to add medroxyprogesterone acetate to the list of prohibited drugs, per AQHA Rule VIO401. Beginning August 15, 2021, medroxyprogesterone acetate will be considered a prohibited substance to protect the welfare and integrity of the American Quarter Horse.

“The decision to waive traditional qualifying for the 2021 Ford Youth World was based on extensive discussion, comparison of previous years’ qualifying data and the cancellation of approximately 30% of the qualifying shows since May 1, 2020, when the qualifying period began,” said Justin Billings, AQHA chief show officer. “We anticipate continued effects of the pandemic, especially in the harder hit areas of the world where many lockdowns remain in place.”

The $8 show administration fee will replace the $5 show processing fee and $1 drug-testing fee. The fee will be charged per horse, per show at all AQHA-approved domestic and international events. The increase will benefit AQHA’s show programs, provide showing members with the best services available and improve support of the showing industry.

ApHC Board of Directors Begin Search for New National Show Site

Because of continuing uncertainty over COVID-19, the ApHC Board of Directors reluctantly withdrew from its contract to hold the 2021 National & World Championship Appaloosa Youth Shows in Indianapolis, Indiana.  ApHC President Ken Johnson said the search will begin immediately to find an alternative site for next year’s show.
