Mom needs plenty of protein too: a lactating mare is not only attempting to maintain her own body condition, but especially in early stages, she is providing all the protein to the foal through the milk as well. This is one of the reasons it can seem difficult to keep a mare in good body condition around foaling and as she begins lactating.

But to me, these backdrop photos and arena shots remind me of why we decided to capture them as keepsakes. Our walls are full of triumphant moments and “remember that time” moments in the show pen. People often wonder why so many people stand alongside of a rider in win photos. It’s because it truly takes a village. From emotional to support to financial backing to just being your friend and confidant.

Continue reading …The bad news was that she severed an artery, and it was confirmed that the laceration did reach the coffin joint. She had completely severed the long digital extensor and medial collateral ligament. Infection was a major concern also, since the injury had not been able to be cleaned until the artery was tied off and the bleeding controlled through surgery.
