Yes, you read the title correctly. A bloodhound named “Pa Kettle,” with the Teller County Search and Rescue in Colorado, beat out a horse and nine other candidates for the title of the Mayor of Divide. Other candidates in the election included five dogs, a cat, a donkey, and a hedgehog named Blackberry.
Because the town of Divide, CO. doesn’t have a human mayor, the election process goes to the dogs… cats, and horses every other year as a fundraiser for the local animal shelter.
Nancy Adams of the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter explains. “There were 11 candidates and each vote costs $1.00. We raised over $12,000 this election. Keyni the wolf is the Vice-mayor, and Buster the cat is the Viceroy. Gracie ran also. She is a mustang who was rescued from Wyoming.”
Now if only there was a way to encourage this kind of participation in human elections… Perhaps we need cuddlier candidates!
