Cody Crow’s business started not with a bang, but a buck. Crow was 19 years old and had just bought a young stallion by Smart Chic. “He was the fanciest horse I’d ever been around,” says Crow. At their first show the young horse spooked at the top of the arena. “He started to flat buck and tried to buck me off,” says Crow. “I was mortified, but afterward I got to laughing about it. I said, ‘There’s nowhere but up from here,’ and the name stuck.”

Today, a photo of 19-year-old Crow aboard that horse mid-buck hangs in the Nowhere But Up Performance Horses office. “It’s a good reminder of where it all started,” says Crow.

Today, Crow and his team at Nowhere But Up are based in Johnson, Colorado, and have earned multiple world and reserve world championships across numerous stock horse organizations. Crow specializes in ranch horse and cow horse events, as well as versatility ranch horse. “We’ve had a very successful few years with world and reserve world titles at the NSBA World Show, AQHA World Show, and Quarter Horse Congress. Our horses have been really consistent; it’s cool to see a horse win a title in cow horse and then go back and win the ranch riding.”
