Knockin It Out is a beautiful, 3-year-old mare by No Doubt I’m Lazy and out of Zippin The Breeze. “She’s the last one out of that great mare,” Katy Jo says. “Dan and Kathy Frederick own her, and they raised her. I started her last spring, and we just took our time with her because we thought she was special from the very beginning.”

The Baker Family of Bandera, Texas, recently donated an additional $100,000 to the American Paint Horse Foundation’s Capital Campaign, bringing their total donations to $300,000 since 2014. The donations are made in memory of Rebecca Sue Harrison Baker, courtesy of her husband Jerry and children.

It is very important for owners to understand what puts a horse at risk of PAL or laminitis from an inappropriate diet, even with no pasture access. PAL is linked to elevated insulin responses. The classical appearance of a horse or pony at risk is one that is overweight with an obvious, fatty crest on the neck, but many metabolically abnormal horses have a normal weight. A horse that is older may also develop Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID/Cushing’s disease) and change from one that always tolerated pasture well to one that is now at risk of laminitis.
