Around the Rings – 2023 APHA World Show, July 2
On Sunday, July 2nd, at the 2023 APHA World Championship Show, handlers and riders were showing their stuff in trail and horsemanship!
That list includes New On the Scene with Cooper Evans, who showed him for owner Leanna Hendricks in the Yearling In Hand Trail. It was a challenging course for a yearling, and the young stallion came through with flying colors to win the big class.
“We actually bought a stud out of Canada last year – one of my clients did – named the New Talent,” explains Cooper. “We knew him from other foals we had seen in the United States, and we really liked him, so my partner, Jody Richard and I, went up and bought three babies out of Canada and brought them back.”
“Everybody always loved the black and white foal in the pasture, and this is him,” adds Cooper. “We decided to bring him in and get him ready, and his owner, Leanna, has put a lot of work into him.”
“I’m really proud of how far along he’s come – this is his second show,” Leanna explains. “He went to Pinto World and survived the tornado.” Leanna says the extreme weather that ended up cancelling the second half of the 2023 Pinto World Championship all happened the night before they were supposed to show on Sunday, and they never did get to show there. “We couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Later when the horsemanship riders took to the arena, the Amateur Horsemanship brought visions of precise patterns and beautiful horsemanship, and the rider who came out on top with Pop Sensation was Libby Maness, who says she’s always been a bridesmaid until this year.
“The first time, I was third in Horsemanship with my youth horse,” she says, explaining that her Pop Sensation, her amateur horse, was her green project for quite a while. “Last year was the first time he was really competitive, and we ended up third last year, which was a huge milestone for us.”
She says she’s thrilled for this year, as he exceeded her expectations, and the difference this time around, she explains, was time. “I’ve had him for 4 ½ years now, and learning each other required I take my time and do it right. We really figured each other out now – we have come to an understanding and really trust each other.”
Earlier in the show, they also won Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation!
