Speed events are a prominent part of the equine industry, and it is important to the American Quarter Horse Association to provide the best conditions for our exhibitors and horses when they compete at the Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show in barrel racing, pole bending and stake race. Not only is it imperative to hold our top events to a high standard, but as a champion of animal welfare and rider safety, it is important to hold all AQHA-approved events to a certain standard when it comes to ground conditions.

“The Association has recently retained the services of speed-event ground expert John Laws to ensure we provide top ground conditions for our exhibitors and horses competing in speed events at the 2018 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show,” said Pete Kyle, AQHA chief show officer. “Our goal is to provide the best ground conditions possible for any discipline, and in order to do so, we must continue to hire additional ground specialists to assist us in making sure the ground for our events is appropriate for all classes.”

Laws has worked with a variety of top barrel racing producers throughout the country, including but not limited to the Barrel Futurities of America Futurity, Old Fort Days, Jud Little Futurity, Lucky Dog Productions and Dixie Nationals.

“Hiring John Laws to work the ground at the Lucas Oil World proves that AQHA is really trying,” said AQHA Professional Horseman and world champion Pete Oen. “It also gives me peace of mind that the ground will be in top shape for the speed events this year!”

The speed events at the 2018 Lucas Oil World have also been scheduled at the beginning of the show to ensure that the ground can be monitored without having to work the arena for different disciplines in between these classes.

“We appreciate all the feedback we’ve received from the barrel racing industry to ensure we are making positive changes,” said Kyle. “We look forward to continue working with barrel racers, event producers, ground specialists and industry leaders to constantly improve the conditions at our shows to not only ensure the safety and welfare of our exhibitors and horses in speed events, but also to strengthen our ties with the barrel racing community.”
