With the 143rd Preakness Stakes coming up Saturday, animal rights activists are calling for a ban on horse whips. A Care2 petition that has gathered over 25,000 signatures is calling on Maryland Jockey Club, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and The Jockey Club to ban horse whips in racing ahead of Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Over 38,000 have signed the Care2 petition.

Gina Powell started the Care2 petition because she believes horse whipping is cruel.
Care2 has a long history of activism against animal abuse and the use of animals for entertainment. Past Care2 petitions have advocated for the end of horse-drawn carriages in Las Vegas, Austin, and Charleston, South Carolina.
The 2018 Preakness Stakes will be held May 19 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
